Sayulitanimals was started by people determined
to improve the lives of the animals and
the people who live in Sayulita. The extreme
overpopulation of cats and dogs was creating
needless animal suffering, damage to the
ecosystem, and unhealthy living conditions
causing pollution and disease. Many attempts
such as Patas, a sterilization program started
by Upi Viteri, and Perritos Merecen Mas,
an animal sponsor program started by Sara
Briner, had begun, but the problem was too
big for individuals.
With the animals' reproductive rates,
the local breeding for fights and profits,
as well as an increase in abandoned pets
in Sayulita, the programs were barely
scratching the surface. Not to mention
that many of the street animals could
not undergo surgery due to their horrible
health conditions.
A dream was sparked in the hearts of Tamara
Edwards, Sara Briner, and Upi Viteri to
open up a different type of organization,
one that would make an impact. They did
not want to stop at spaying and neutering
and adoptions. The needs of the community
were greater. The organization set out
to supply medical aid for street animals
and families who could not pay for services,
educate people who did not know the basic
needs of their pets, help organize adoptions
and fosters, and provide free, weekly
spays and neuters to all the animals.
The first year of business was full of
trials and errors, but with a lot of hard
work, a difference was evident. In one
year, there was over three hundred successful
spays and neuters, over forty happy adoptions,
nearly thirty fosters, connections for
educating the public, and a huge improvement
in the health of Sayulita's dogs and cats.
But there is still so much to do. Daily
we hear of bags full of meat that has
been marinated in rat poison, animals
scalded with hot water and chemicals,
kittens trapped in bags and thrown in
the river, puppies in the garbage or tied
to trees left to die in the jungle, and
endless amounts of abuse to personal pets.
We are here to provide education and options
through community programs
and services. With extreme losses and
gains Sayulitanimals continues to press
forward attacking animal cruelty, providing
a cleaner environment, and assisting those
in need.
Please join in our mission to make Sayulita
a healthier, cleaner town, free from animal
cruelty. Whether you are a tourist, resident,
investor or an animal lover, we need to
gather as a community to make this a world
we can all live in together.
